Overview
Complementary medicine is used along with standard medical treatments. One example is using acupuncture to help with side effects of cancer treatment such as nausea and vomiting. Alternative medicine is used in place of standard medical treatments. An example is using a special diet to treat cancer instead of a method that an oncologist suggests. To date, no complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapy has been proved to be universally effective in the treatment of cancer, but promising research suggests that these therapies may be a valuable adjunct to treatment.
