Signs, Symptoms and Consequences
Oral mucositis can cause severe discomfort and interfere with a patient’s ability to swallow, eat and speak. It also increases the risk of infection, which can be life-threatening.
Risk Factors
A combination of patient and treatment related factors need to be assessed for in determining an individual’s risk for mucositis.
Pathophysiology
Epithelial cells lining the oral mucosa are easily damaged by chemotherapy and radiation therapy leading to alterations in integrity.
