Site-Specific Cancer Series: Breast Cancer Online Course

Site Specific: Breast Cancer is an informative course providing the quality instruction you expect from ONS in a convenient format. The courses are faculty-mediated programs, allowing students to interact directly with the faculty through e-mail and chat forums. Working along with the accompanying text, students will engage in self-paced reading assignments, activities, and learning opportunities. Students will interact with faculty through e-mails, chat forums, and ongoing evaluation of assignments. The student forums will provide opportunities to share expertise with colleagues.

State two historical trends in breast cancer.
Identify epidemiologic trends in breast cancer in the United States.
State at least five risk factors associated with the development of breast cancer and describe the physiologic basis of each.
List three key indicators of hereditary breast/ovarian cancer that warrant referral for cancer genetics counseling.
Describe advances in breast imaging, including mammography, ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (PET) scanning.
Summarize the current and emerging strategies in the prevention and detection of breast.
Apply the TNM staging system to determine stage of breast cancer.
Describe surgical management techniques in breast cancer.
Differentiate breast reconstruction and restoration options post–breast surgery.
Describe side effects associated with various chemotherapeutic, hormonal, and targeted therapies.
Describe the principles of radiation therapy in the management of breast cancer.
List two side effects commonly experienced by those who undergo radiotherapy to the breast.
Identify clinical trials resources available to healthcare professionals and patients.
Describe at least two new targets in the treatment of breast cancer.
