Pre-Congress SessionsGet More Education and More Contact Hours at Pre-Congress SessionsHeld on May 14, pre-Congress sessions give you an opportunity to get even more oncology nursing information. You can register for this optional programming when you register for Congress online or when you register using the official Congress registration form. All pre-Congress sessions are categorized by level and track to make it easy for you to choose which ones you'd like to attend.
The Balance Within: Understanding the Immunological and Endocrine Systems to Improve Outcomes for Patients with Hematological MalignanciesWednesday, May 14 • 2-6 PM This session provides an up-to-date overview of the immunological and endocrine systems and how these systems interact. Using case studies in patients with hematological malignancies, speakers will examine the implications of new understandings of these two systems for nursing assessment and management of disease- and treatment-related complications including hypersensitivity reactions, graft versus host disease, steroid induced hyperglycemia, adrenal insufficiency, thyroid dysfunction, and symptoms such as fatigue, sleep and mood disturbances, muscle weakness, and lack of appetite.
Help! Call 911! Evidence-Based Care and Treatment Strategies for Metabolic Oncologic EmergenciesWednesday, May 14 • 9 AM-1 PM (repeated 2-6 PM) This session will provide an overview of metabolic oncologic emergencies and emphasize evidence-based practice for prevention, early detection, and treatment strategies when caring for the patient with cancer. Nursing care of the patient with DIC, sepsis, tumor lysis syndrome, hypercalcemia of malignancy, or SIADH will be exemplified through case study analysis.
Complex Palliative Symptom Management in Advanced Cancer PatientsWednesday, May 14 • 2-6 PM This session will provide an in-depth discussion using case studies of the management of symptoms commonly experienced by patients with advanced cancer. The presentation will focus on evidence-based approaches to the pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic management of non-pain symptoms, including dyspnea, delirium/agitation.
Optimizing Cancer Care Delivery: Setting the Stage for the Role of the Nurse NavigatorWednesday, May 14 • 2-6 PM A relatively new role of the nurse is that of a nurse navigator. Nurse navigators, also known as case managers or care coordinators, are experienced oncology nurses who provide expert knowledge to help patients and their loved ones understand their diagnosis and treatment options and to guide them through the various community and supportive resources available to them. Nurse navigators improve the quality of cancer care by serving as their advocate from the time of diagnosis throughout their cancer journey. This session will provide you with tips for developing and implementing a successful navigator program as well as ways to enhance your current program by providing an overview of outcome measures that can be used to document effects of nursing interventions.
Unscrambling the ABCs of Targeted TherapiesWednesday, May 14 • 9 AM-1 PM (repeated 2-6 PM) Targeted therapies are quickly emerging as a major cornerstone of oncology therapies. Consequently, you need to be able to speak to the mechanisms of action that underlie these therapies and their unique side effects. To do so implies that we need a functional understanding of the biological processes that underlie these therapies, particularly basic cellular biology and immunology. The purpose of the session is NOT to provide a simplified, condensed version of microbiology, but rather a focused discussion on the specific processes that underlie the major targeted therapies commonly seen today.
What's New, What's Best? Oncologic Wound and Skin Care IssuesWednesday, May 14 • 9 AM-1 PM (repeated 2-6 PM) Designed for the bedside nurse, this session will focus on the science of wound healing principles and evidenced based interventions as they relate to oncology care. Speakers will address fungating skin lesions/cancers and the management of drainage and odor, treatment strategies for skin reactions related to targeted therapies, and interventions for edema control. A basic review of interventions for management of pressure sores, ostomy and tube management, and radiation skin care will also be presented. You’ll get evidence-based interventions and tools to encourage wound healing and improve quality of life. Case studies will showcase nursing interventions, and you’ll engage in lively discussions.
Cancer CAM: Principles and Practices of Common ModalitiesWednesday, May 14 • 9 AM-6 PM This program will provide you with in-depth information to integrate the role of complementary and alternative medicine into cancer care. You’ll also get hands-on experience with several common therapies. This unique experience will combine didactic, role-playing, case study, panel discussion and workshop venues to stimulate learning and retention.
Our Future is in their Hands. Developing the Next Generation of Oncology Nursing Leaders Using the Forces of MagnetismWednesday, May 14 • 9 AM-6 PM Designing strategies to foster staff engagement is the key to success for oncology nursing's future. Four magnet-designated facilities will describe how they develop and promote staff involvement in a variety of activities that are strategically aligned to promote staff satisfaction, evidence-based practice, staff decision-making, leadership succession planning, and collaboration. This presentation will provide oncology nursing leaders and frontline staff with concepts and fully implemented programs to help organizations design and influence the future of oncology nursing to promote oncology nursing excellence.
Pharmacology UpdateWednesday, May 14 • 9 AM-6 PM Get a new perspective on pharmacology in today’s world of cancer care.
