The US Food and Drug Administration granted approval for denosumab (Prolia®, Amgen Inc.) as a treatment to increase bone mass in patients at high risk for fracture receiving androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) for nonmetastatic prostate cancer or adjuvant aromatase inhibitor (AI) therapy for breast cancer. In men with nonmetastatic prostate cancer, denosumab also reduced the incidence of vertebral fracture.

The Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI) Program is an annual event sponsored by the Nursing Organizations Alliance. The purpose of the NIWI Program is to provide nurses the opportunity to learn how to influence health care through legislative and regulatory processes. Participants learn from health policy experts and government officials and network with other nurses. The next NIWI is scheduled to be held February 26–28, 2012, in Washington, DC. This year, ONS is offering a limited number of grants for nurses to attend NIWI. The deadline to apply for the grant is November 1, 2011. Recipients of the grants will receive full registration for NIWI, expenses for travel and hotel, and a per diem.

Food and Drug Administration approved vandetanib tablets (Vandetanib Tablets, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP), a kinase inhibitor, for the treatment of symptomatic or progressive medullary thyroid cancer in patients with unresectable, locally advanced, or metastatic disease. The use of vandetanib in patients with indolent, asymptomatic or slowly progressing disease should be carefully considered because of the treatment-related risks of vandetanib.

Study Supports Forgoing Axillary Dissection in Some Patients With Breast Cancer

A study published Wednesday in JAMA found that, among a small subset of patients with breast cancer, axillary dissection in patients with sentinel node metastases does not significantly affect survival rates. The study was covered by the mainstream media with a New York Times’ reporter describing it as turning “standard medical practice on its head.” Although the findings are exciting for breast cancer patients, nurses play a key role in helping patients understand the limitations of the findings.

For many years, the ONS Leadership Development Institute (LDI) has brought together hundreds of participants from a variety of backgrounds for a three-day leadership conference followed by a year of mentorship and goal accomplishment. Due to changing needs, the decision has been made to take a step back from our current LDI program in 2011 and allow for a period of assessment and reflection. Therefore, ONS will not offer LDI in 2011. We look forward to a continued tradition of excellence in leadership programming that will address the needs of nurses in the future.
