Marcelle Kaplan, RN, MS, AOCN®, CBCN®, Chosen 2011 Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse of the Year

The Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) has selected Marcelle Kaplan, RN, MS, AOCN®, CBCN® as the 2011 Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse of the Year. Kaplan won the award for her significant contributions to oncology nursing and oncology nursing service and for supporting and promoting certification in oncology nursing. She is an Oncology Nurse Consultant from Merrick, NY. Kaplan was presented with the award during the ONCC Recognition Breakfast for Oncology Certified Nurses on April 29, 2011 in Boston, MA.

Oncology certification is a passion for Kaplan, who has served as an ONCC Test Item Writer, Test Development Committee Chair, and President of the ONCC Board of Directors. She more recently participated on the Advisory Committee, Role Delineation Study Task Force, and Passing Score Task Force for CBCN® Certification. She successfully motivated one of her patients to donate $40,000 to fund oncology nursing certification activities at Weill Cornell Medical Center. This increased the number of certified nurses from 11% to nearly 50% in just a few years.

Kaplan also has significant volunteer experience with the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), including as Associate Editor of the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing, editor of the book Understanding Oncologic Emergencies, member of the Advanced Practice Conference Planning Team, chair of the Nominating Committee, and various chapter leadership positions. She is extremely active in community events related to breast cancer.

Kaplan is well-regarded as an educator of nurses, patients, and families. She developed a 4-hour oncology overview course for nurses, created English/Spanish versions of a patient education booklet about breast cancer, and served as project director for a series of teaching videos for breast surgery patients.

Kaplan is one of more than 30,000 nurses certified either as an Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN®), Certified Pediatric Oncology Nurse (CPON®), Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse (AOCN®), Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner (AOCNP®), Advanced Oncology Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist (AOCNS®), Certified Breast Care Nurse (CBCN®) or Certified Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurse (CPHON®)

The Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse of the Year Award is presented annually to an advanced oncology certified nurse (AOCN®, AOCNP®, or AOCNS®). To win the award, nominees must obtain recommendations from two colleagues in the nursing profession; prepare an essay describing how (s)he has promoted certification; summarize services offered that enhance oncology care and oncology nursing; and demonstrate accomplishments in two areas of oncology nursing practice – clinical practice, education, consultation, or research.

Recipients receive $1,000 and a crystal award at the Recognition Breakfast for Oncology Certified Nurses at the ONS Annual Congress.

The Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC), an affiliated organization of ONS, administers and evaluates programs for certification in oncology nursing. Learn more about ONCC at www.oncc.org
