Instructions

What is ACTION?

Formulating a comprehensive plan of care for the patient undergoing chemotherapy requires action. The nurse administering chemotherapy must be well prepared for this role. The acronym ACTION stands for the necessary steps in ensuring safe delivery of chemotherapy: Assessment, knowledge of the Chemotherapy treatment plan, Teaching, ability to manage Immediate side effects, ability to manage Ongoing side effects, and proper Notation.

By following these six steps consistently, nurses can administer chemotherapy safely. After reading this booklet and playing ACTION Trivia, nurses will gain a greater understanding of how to formulate and carry out a comprehensive plan of care for their patients receiving chemotherapy.

Playing the Game

  1. Divide into two teams. Each team gets a book of questions and a red or blue playing piece. Place the pieces on the START square.
  2. Roll the die to see which team starts the game. Highest roll wins.
  3. Each turn begins with rolling the die. Move your playing piece forward along the colored squares. Have your opposing team read you a question from the corresponding colored page in the book of questions. If you are playing with pediatric nurses, use the pediatric supplemental questions in addition to the regular questions. If you answer correctly, mark off the category on the score card and take an additional turn. If you answer incorrectly, it is the other team’s turn. NO MORE than two questions can be answered when your team is up for play.
  4. If your team lands on a wild square, you can pick the category.
  5. Continue playing until you have answered one question from each category and you reach the FINISH square.
  6. When you are on the FINISH square, your opposing team will pick a question from the Chemotherapy Challenge booklet.
  7. The team that answers the Chemotherapy Challenge question correctly on the FINISH square first wins the game.
