Preface

Despite strategies to prevent cancer and to offer novel therapeutic advances, cancer continues to be second only to cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of death from disease in the United States. Mapping of the human genome has made it possible for researchers to identify and develop targeted therapies that are used in the treatment of cancer. Significant progress has been made in this area over the past five years.

Further advances in pharmacotherapeutic research with antineoplastic therapy has placed in the armamentarium of the oncology healthcare team an arsenal of new therapies to prevent and control many of the historical dose-limiting side effects of cancer chemotherapy. With these advances come new challenges and hope for patients with cancer, caregivers, and medical providers. Never before have oncology healthcare providers been able to offer to their patients such an array of therapeutic options for systemic treatment of their neoplastic disease.

This second edition of the Clinical Guide to Antineoplastic Therapy: A Chemotherapy Handbook is a timely comprehensive resource for healthcare professionals responsible for the care of patients undergoing antineoplastic therapy. An esteemed group of oncology healthcare professionals, who are knowledgeable, committed, and dedicated to quality cancer care, have compiled and reviewed the latest evidence-based information for this edition.

The administration of antineoplastic agents is serious work. It requires knowledgeable oncology healthcare professionals who are prepared to educate patients and family members about the antineoplastic therapy to treat their disease. Patient and staff safety are high priorities with chemotherapy administration. It is imperative that patients receive education about anticipated side effects and their management. Nurses, pharmacists, and physicians handling these agents must be knowledgeable regarding the cellular mechanisms and pharmacologic principles, as well as skilled and competent in chemotherapy administration and safe handling.

This second edition has been expanded to include five new chapters based on suggestions and recommendations by readers of the first edition. These new chapters include content on targeted therapy, chemotherapy regimens, complementary and alternative therapy, botanicals, and issues surrounding reimbursement. These additional chapters have been written by practicing experts in oncology who are well-versed in the subject matter. The addition of these five new content areas will prove invaluable to your practice.

The ONS Publishing Division has made this resource available for use as a comprehensive reference for oncology healthcare team members. This practical handbook is intended for physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and pharmacists involved in the treatment of patients with cancer who are receiving antineoplastic agents. The information provided on each antineoplastic agent, listed in Chapter 5, is based on the current guidelines from the manufacturers and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The book contains up-to-date information on managing vascular access devices, symptom management, clinical trials, psychosocial support and cancer resources, and legal issues.

The practitioner is encouraged to follow prescribed and approved protocols when dosing and administering chemotherapy and to consult other primary literature on chemotherapy agents as appropriate.
