Epilogue
Five years ago, when the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Putting Evidence Into Practice (PEP) Resources were just a dream, it was never imagined what a huge success these evidence-based resources would be! The resources were first introduced to the ONS membership in 2006, and they continue to be in high demand by members and nonmembers. Numerous presentations have been made both nationally and internationally on the ONS PEP Resources, which speaks to the interest that other organizations have in the initiative.
ONS members have a critical role in developing the ONS PEP Resources. They identify the need for a specific resource and work together as a team composed of advanced practice nurses, staff nurses, and nurse scientists to develop it. We have listened to what our members want, and Putting Evidence Into Practice: Improving Oncology Patient Outcomes is a result of your requests. Many members told us that more information was needed about how to measure the effect of evidence-based interventions on patient outcomes. In addition, we were told how challenging it is to carry 16 cards in one’s pocket! We hope this book has met both of those needs.
As more scientific evidence is published, the ONS PEP Resources will continue to be updated. I hope that by the next edition of this book, we will have data that demonstrate the positive impact of the ONS PEP Resources on patient outcomes. Data can be collected on a unit or hospital level through quality improvement projects or through a research protocol. If you are collecting information on the impact of the ONS PEP Resources on patient outcomes, please be sure to contact the ONS Research Team at research@ons.org.
I am pleased that you are using this book to "PEP Up Your Practice!"
