Evaluating Review Articles

Before a research synthesis is used for evidence-based projects, it needs to be evaluated. Such a critique should include the following:

  • Process that was used to search for and find the research studies
  • Rationale for including the specific studies
  • Level of evidence of research studies included
  • Appropriateness of the practice recommendations.

Based upon several published critiquing guides (Whittemore, 2005; Oxman, et al. 1994; Stetler, et al. 1998; Brown, 1999), please review the basic outline for this type of critique.
