Preamble
The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) has assumed a leadership position with other oncology organizations at all levels—local, state, and national—so that it may be a full partner in implementing decisions about quality cancer care. Oncology nursing’s contribution to quality cancer care is central to the work of the Society. This strategic plan serves to set direction and priorities for ONS and its affiliated corporations. To develop this plan, ONS conducted an environmental scan in 2004. The report examined the macro environment, the ONS operating environment, association industry trends, and the members’ operating environment. The implications that emerged were used to establish tactics and measurements.

Inherent in this plan are ideals that permeate all that ONS does. ONS's core values and ethical principles provide the foundation for decision making within the Society, by both members and staff. All decisions regarding use of the Society's assets are made in a fiscally responsible manner, guided by the principles of stewardship. ONS actively seeks input from all members and provides equal opportunities for participation in the work of the Society. ONS values the perspective of consumer advocates and seeks to integrate their perspective into the work of the Society. Culturally, ethnically, and racially diverse membership and leadership are a priority; they will strengthen the Society and provide relevant and competent care to patients with cancer.

This plan is monitored by the Board of Directors on an ongoing basis, and expected outcomes are determined annually. This plan maintains a focus on new initiatives that reach beyond the ongoing operations of ONS.

The tactics and measurements in this plan are designed to fulfill the mission of the Society.
