2008 ONS Strategic Plan

Strategic Focus:  Leadership/Advocacy
Outcome:
ONS develops leaders within the organization and the profession of oncology nursing.


Tactics:
  • Produce leadership programs at the regional and national level.
  • Recruit and retain a diverse leadership pool from a growing membership.
  • Expand public awareness of ONS’s and oncology nursing’s contributions to quality cancer care.
  • Promote policy and legislation that support the priorities of the ONS Health Policy Agenda.
  • Initiate ONS-drafted legislation to ensure reimbursement of nurses’ time for patient education related to treatment.
  • Develop initiatives to inform the membership about the health care platform of U.S. presidential candidates.
  • Promote active participation in support of ONS’s Health Policy Agenda.
Measurements:
  • Media coverage of ONS includes at least two stories in national trade media and one in national public media.
  • Strategic media and communication training is conducted in at least three venues for ONS leadership, members, and staff.
  • One Leadership Development Institute and one Leadership Spa are implemented.
  • At least three ONS leaders are appointed to national panels or committees.
  • Direct input is provided to at least two pieces of related federal legislation.
  • Membership is increased by at least 7%.
  • Member retention rate is at or above 87%.
  • Legislation is introduced and member awareness analyzed.
  • The 2008 presidential candidate survey responses are published and promoted.
  • A U.S. presidential candidate event is implemented at ONS Congress.
  • A plan is developed to prepare the next generation of leaders.
