ONCC Certification Awards

ONCC Certification and Outcomes Research Grant (R24)

Letter of Intent due: June 27, 2007

Award: One $60,000 two-year grant award. Funding will be available by October 2007.

Purpose: Applications are invited for proposals that address oncology nursing certification and its impact on oncology nursing-sensitive patient outcomes. Nursing-sensitive patient outcomes represent the consequences or effects of nursing interventions and result in changes in patients' symptom experience, functional status, safety, psychological distress, and/or costs.

The American Board of Nursing Specialties (2003) defined nursing certification as the formal recognition of the specialized knowledge, skills, and experience demonstrated by the achievement of standards identified by a nursing specialty to promote optimal patient care. Oncology nursing certification provides tangible evidence that nurses have the knowledge required to effectively provide care to patients experiencing the complex problems associated with a diagnosis of cancer. Additional information about oncology nursing certification can be found at http://www.oncc.org/. A priority research area of the 2005 - 2009 ONS Research Agenda (www.ons.org/research/information/agenda) is research in nursing-sensitive patient outcomes. It is expected that there is a relationship between the practice of oncology certified nurses and nursing-sensitive patient outcomes identified above. The purpose of this call for research proposals is to support the investigation of this relationship.

Eligibility: The principal investigator must be actively involved in some aspect of cancer patient care, education, or research. Funding preference is given to projects that involve nurses in the design and conduct of the research activity. Membership in ONS is not required.

Applications due: August 1, 2007

The ONS Research Agenda recommends the development of research partnerships between scientists and clinical oncology nurses. Funding preference is given to proposals that have an advanced practice nurse with a master's degree as a co-investigator.
