ONS Excellence Awards

Excellence in Pain Management Award Winner

All awards, grants, and scholarships are tentative and subject to change based on funding availability.

Excellence in Pain Management Award (EC07)

Award: A $4,000 award and a plaque.

Purpose: To support and recognize an oncology nurse for excellence in and dedication to pain management.

Nominee's Eligibility Criteria:
The candidate must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a registered professional nurse and an active ONS member
  • Be a recognized expert in the field of pain management (e.g., through publications, presentations, and research peer review/perceptions)
  • Made a significant contribution to one or more of the following related to pain management: professional/patient education, clinical practice, or nursing research
  • Serves as a role model for other nurses.

Weight of Each Criterion: The scoring criteria for judging this nomination packet is as follows:

  1. ONS involvement (5%). Participation should include involvement at the local or national level, and includes membership on committees, holding office, or task force participation.
  2. Recognized expert in the field of pain management, contributing to the development of pain management nursing practice (25%). (Includes articles in newsletters, journals, reports, video, multimedia, computer assisted instruction, chapters in books-do not include research here, include research in criteria #5).
  3. Significant contribution to the following areas:
    Professional/patient education related to pain management (30%)
    • Presentations
    • Examples in letters of role modeling
    • Specific educational interventions
    • Program development
    • Support groups
    • Adjunct faculty to preceptor for students
    • Community outreach
  4. Clinical practice related to pain management (30%)
    • Theoretical concepts used
    • Nursing process used
    • Professional development of self and others
    • Multidisciplinary collaboration
    • Quality assurance
    • Ethical decision-making used
    • Reviews/applies nursing research
  5. Pain management research (10%)
