ONS Lung Cancer Online Course
This site specific online course would provide detailed information to help nurses understand the current management of lung cancer. Based on the ONS publication Site-Specific Cancer Series: Lung Cancer, the course will address the following:

  • Biology and therapeutic implications
  • Cancer control issues
  • Patient Assessment
  • Oncologic urgencies and emergencies
  • Symptom management

ONS Radiation Therapy Course
The content of the one-day course is appropriate for those who are new to radiation therapy as well as for those who would like a comprehensive review on this topic. Principles of radiation therapy, new radiation treatment modalities, and management of side effects are among the course key topics. The ONS Manual for Radiation Oncology Nursing Practice and Education and ONS Radiation Therapy patient Care Record serve as the required texts for the course.

ONS Safe Handling of Hazardous Drugs Online Course
Safe Handling of Hazardous Drugs is an informative course providing the quality instruction you expect from ONS in a new, convenient format. The classes are faculty-mediated programs, allowing students to interact directly with the faculty through e-mail and chat forums. Working along with the text, students will engage in self-paced reading assignments, activities, and learning opportunities. Students will interact with faculty through e-mails, chat forums, and ongoing evaluation of assignments. The student forums will provide opportunities to share expertise with colleagues. Fighting Angiogenesis in Solid Tumors: New Research, Promising Agents
Angiogenesis is the process through which a tumor attempts to gain its own blood supply, thus supplying nutrients and promoting tumor growth. This can be accomplished by stimulating growth factors on the cell endothelium. Cancer therapies aim to block angiogenesis. Targeting vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF) is one means of accomplishing this. VEGF plays a critical role in cell growth and apoptosis-in both normal and cancerous cells. Targeting VEGF is proving to be a successful way to treat colorectal, breast, and non-small cell lung cancers. In this program, you'll learn about:

Small Molecules in the Treatment of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death in men and women. Less than 15% of those diagnosed with lung cancer will be alive after five years; the five-year survival rate drops to less than 6% with a diagnosis of advanced lung cancer. Thus, treatment goals have centered on improving quality of life and prolonging survival. With the advent of targeted therapies in treating non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), prolonging survival, with quality, is possible. Epidermal growth factors (EGF) are normal proteins that regulate cell growth, differentiation, and survival. Dysregulation of these growth factors is associated with a poor prognosis in NSCLC. Inhibiting epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR) may inhibit tumor growth, as demonstrated in NSCLC, head and neck, ovarian, and colon cancers. This program will discuss the role of targeting EGFR with small molecule targeted therapies in NSCLC, including a comprehensive discussion on the mechanism of action, associated side effects and management strategies, and additional nursing implications.
