Special Populations

The cancer incidence, mortality, and survival rates for many of the leading cancers are disproportionately higher for certain special population groups.

Geriatrics
Cancer occurs predominantly in older adults. In fact, 60% of all cancers occur in individuals over 65 years of age. Because age is one of the most important risk factors for cancer, the clinical areas of oncology and gerontology overlap significantly.

Multi-culturally Competent Care
Culturally competent care is defined as, “the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to provide quality clinical care to patients from different cultural, ethnic and racial backgrounds.” It is important to consider and be aware of the diversity of individuals when administering care.
