ONS Website Editorial Board: Biographical Information
Karen Roesser, RN, MS, AOCN®
Karen
Roesser RN, MSN, AOCN® received her BSN and MSN with a specialization in
oncology from Russell Sage College in Troy, NY. She has worked in the
field of oncology for her entire nursing career. This has included both
the inpatient and outpatient settings in the areas of medical oncology,
surgical oncology, and bone marrow transplantation. At the present time,
she is practicing as an Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Thomas
Johns Cancer Center at CJW Medical Center in Richmond, VA. In this role,
she provides consultative services to complex medical oncology patients
as well as education to nurses and to the community. In addition, she
provides genetic counseling to patients at risk for hereditary colon cancer
syndromes. Her interests include symptom management, palliative care,
cancer genetics, and patient education.
She has presented nationally on numerous occasions and has written educational monographs, book chapters and articles which have appeared on the Oncology Nursing Forum, Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing, and the California Nursing Review. She is an ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy trainer and an ELNEC trainer. In addition, she coordinated a three day course which is used by all HCA Hospitals nationwide to educate nurses new to oncology.
She is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society, the ONS Chemotherapy SIG, the Cancer Genetics SIG, and Sigma Theta Tau. She and her husband Jim, a biochemist who conducts cancer research, have been married for 22 years. They have a 16-year-old son John and 14-year-old daughter Laura.
