FAQ About Publishing With ONS
I am interested in writing for publication. What should I do?
ONS's journal editors are always willing to talk to members interesting in writing for publication. Click here here for author guidelines for the Oncology Nursing Forum (ONF). Click here for author guidelines for the Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing (CJON). If you want to discuss a potential article topic, need help narrowing the focus of your article, or have questions about creating a table or figure, the editors are more than glad to help. Does ONS provide any support for new writers?
The Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing (CJON) supports a Mentor/Fellow Writing Program for new writers designed to encourage oncology nurses, who have never before written a journal article, to write articles for publication by giving them the opportunity to be mentored through the publishing process.
Mentor/fellow dyads are selected through an application process. A "Call" for applicants appears in the December and January ONS journals and newsletters. The deadline to apply is mid-February. Once paired, the mentor guides the fellow through the manuscript development and writing process; assists the fellow in submitting the article to CJON; and continues to work closely with the fellow after the manuscript goes through peer review to assist in making the reviewers' recommended modifications/changes to the article for resubmission and publication. The article undergoes the same peer review process as any article submitted to CJON. For more information, please e-mail pubCJON@ons.org.
Are guidelines for writing for ONS publications available online?
Yes. Simply visit the "Publishing With ONS" page for author guidelines for the Oncology Nursing Forum, Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing, ONS books, and more.
Why are some Oncology Nursing Forum articles (ONF) only available online?
Beginning in January 2002, various ONF articles were made available "online only," meaning that one could access the full text of the articles only by visiting the ONF area of www.ons.org. This enables the ONF editor to include more articles with each issue while incurring only a minimal increase in production costs. Another reason for including online only articles relates to the timeliness of publication. Basically, the time from article submission to final publication is much less for online only articles, enabling them and their timely information to reach readers sooner.
