Opening Ceremony • Thursday, April 28 • 9-11 am
Scott Burton, award-winning comic, world champion juggler, and eight-year cancer survivor will present this year's keynote address. In “Looking for Laughter in All the Wrong Places,” Burton will emphasize the human side of the cancer experience and remind you not to lose sight that you are treating unique individuals. Burton, who believes in the importance of humor in the fight against cancer, has completed two years toward his degree in speech communications at the University of Minnesota. He has worked as a headlining entertainer for 15 years and has been published in Coping With Cancer, MGI Pharma's Comfort Zone, Minneapolis Star Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press. He is author of A Life in Balance and has also been selected as a contributor to the next printing of Chicken Soup for the Surviving Soul. In 1992, Burton was diagnosed with a high-grade osteosarcoma and since then has blended his worlds of comedy, juggling, and story-telling to provide a potent, meaningful message to healthcare providers and cancer survivors.

Distinguished Researcher Session • Thursday, April 28 • 1:30-3 pm
Marilyn Frank-Stromborg, EdD, JD, ANP, FAAN, distinguished research professor and former chair of the Northern Illinois University School of Nursing, is the ONS 2005 Distinguished Researcher Award recipient. At this year's Congress, she will present “A Research Driven Life.” A leader in her field, Frank-Stromborg was appointed to the National Advisory Council for Nursing Research, National Institutes of Health. A well-known author and speaker, Frank-Stromborg's work has been published extensively in a number of journals, including Oncology Nursing Forum, Nursing Spectrum, Seminars in Oncology Nursing, and Journal of Nursing Law. She has lectured about cancer risk factors, radon screening, pain management, and more. A long-time ONS member, Frank-Stromborg also belongs to Sigma Theta Tau International and was on the Illinois State Board of Nursing for more than four years.

ONS/Schering-Plough Oncology/Biotech Clinical Lecture* • Friday, April 29 • 12:30-2 pm
Carol Sue Viele, RN, MS, clinical nurse specialist at the University of California, San Francisco, will present this year's ONS/Schering Oncology/Biotech Clinical Lecture.* In “Keys to Unlock Cancer: Targeted Therapies,” Viele will guide you through the complex process of cellular growth signaling pathways, specifically angiogenesis and the epidermal growth factor. She will help you to understand the specific steps in the process of cancer growth and spread and the role that targeted therapies play in halting these events. Viele has presented nationally on a number of cancer nursing topics, including bone marrow transplantation, breast cancer, chemotherapy, biologic response modifiers, radiation oncology, and more. Her articles have appeared in numerous publications, including the Oncology Nursing Forum and Seminars in Oncology Nursing. In addition to ONS, Viele belongs to the American Nurses Association, the Bay Area Clinical Nurse Specialists Group, and the Bay Area Vascular Access Network.

The first 1,000 paid Congress registrants will receive an admission ticket in their registration packet at Congress. If you do not receive a ticket, you may be able to get one on site the day of the event, as seats may become available.

Mara Mogensen Flaherty Memorial Lecture • Saturday, April 30 • 8:30-10 am
Susan M. Bauer-Wu, DNSc, RN, director of Research in Nursing and Patient Care Services at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, will present the 2005 Mara Mogensen Flaherty Memorial Lecture. In “Seeds of Hope, Blossoms of Meaning,” Bauer-Wu will talk about her work in creating healing programs for patients, families, and healthcare professionals. She'll share how these programs combine creative and expressive therapies, meditation, massage, supportive and authentic dialogue, and connection with nature. Bauer-Wu has written articles for a number of publications, including Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Journal of Cancer Education, and The Japanese Journal of Nursing. She has presented on various topics, including survivorship, wellness, psychoneuroimmunology, complementary and alternative medicine, and mind-body interventions. In addition to ONS, Bauer-Wu is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, the Eastern Nursing Research Society, and the American Psychosocial Oncology Society. Supported by Sanofi-Synthelabo.
