ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Course • April 26-27, 2005
More than 54,000 nurses have taken the ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Course, one of the Society's most popular educational offerings. Designed to encourage consistency in chemotherapy administration, the course will be offered in conjunction with Congress. This two-day course will provide you with a comprehensive overview of chemotherapy and biotherapy.

Offering 16.2 continuing-education credits, the course focuses on the theoretical knowledge base needed to administer these treatments, including cellular kinetics, drug classifications, safe handling, administration, side effect management, and patient-education strategies. It also includes case studies relating to the theoretical principles. Attendees will receive a copy of Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Guidelines and Recommendations for Practice. Those who successfully complete the course and a post test receive a personalized ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Card that demonstrates they've taken the course and have the knowledge necessary to administer chemotherapy and biotherapy. The card is valid for two years and can be renewed by completing an independent study that includes updates on new drugs, administration techniques, and other practice issues.

This course is the first review related to oncology advanced practice nursing that addresses the differentiation of oncology APN practice as identified in the most current role-delineation study. The overall objective of the review is to help oncology APNs prepare for the AOCNS and AOCNP examinations. Speakers will address commonalities in oncology APN practice as well as specific content related to the clinical nurse specialist and nurse practitioner role in breakout sessions. This review will focus on the APN role in cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis and staging, treatment, psychosocial aspects, oncologic emergencies, end-of-life care, and research utilization. The separate NP portion will emphasize professional practice, coordination of care, symptom management (including the challenges of comorbidity and toxicity management), and the APN's role in working with those at risk for hereditary cancers. The CNS breakout will emphasize professional practice, coordination of care (including case management), and symptom management and will review the additional roles of the CNS-educator, consultant, and administrator. Attendees will receive 14 continuing-education credits upon completion of the course.
