The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute opened in 1990 as the adult patient care component of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. The James is the only freestanding cancer hospital in Ohio and one of only 39 comprehensive cancer centers in the nation as designated by the National Cancer Institute. Inspired by a common sense of purpose, the hospital's team of professionals is committed to providing high-quality programs devoted solely to cancer prevention, detection, treatment, and education. This commitment is reflected by the compassion and expertise of caregivers; ongoing research into the causes, prevention, and treatment of cancer; and many community outreach efforts that promote cancer prevention and early detection. The James is consistently listed by U.S. News & World Report as one of America's best hospitals for cancer care. The 160-bed hospital has 13 floors, containing 268,000 square feet, and includes a 24-bed bone marrow transplantation unit, 26 basic research laboratories and support facilities, six specialized surgical suites, a perianesthesia unit for pre- and postoperative care of in- and outpatients, a clinical laboratory, private chemotherapy suites at multiple locations, and pharmacies dedicated to chemotherapy. The James combines research and treatment areas to facilitate the application of research advances to patient care. In fiscal 2004-2005, the James had 7,420 inpatient admissions and 156, 974 visits to all outpatient areas.
