Pre-Congress Session 1: A Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Primer

This is an all-day session.

This unique workshop experience will combine didactic, role-play, case studies, and panel discussion to stimulate learning, information retention, and integration of CAM into cancer care. You’ll get handson experiences with several common therapies.

Pre-Congress Session 2: Pharmacology Update
Monday, April 23, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
This is an all-day session.

ONS continues the Pharmacology Course, offering the second installment as a pre-Congress session. This course provides a new perspective on pharmacology in today’s world of cancer care. This particular course will discuss drug metabolism and its impact on polypharmacy as well as specific medications used for managing cancer treatment-related symptoms. Speakers will explore patient comorbidities and their impact on polypharmacy. Additionally, you’ll learn about novel formulations of standard medications used in cancer treatment and symptom management.

Pre-Congress Session 3: Evidence-Based Approach to Care and Management of Vascular Access Devices

This is a half day session.

This half-day workshop will provide you with an evidence-based review and update on care issues related to vascular access devices. The program format will include didactic instruction supported by case studies and audience participation as well as interactive practicum activities. Pre-Congress Session 4: Keeping Safe: Occupational Risks in Oncology Health Settings
Monday, April 23, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm
This is a half day session.

What do hazardous drug handling and infectious disease exposure have in common? They’re common occupational risks associated with the oncology work setting. Attend this half-day program to learn more about these risks as well as others. Speakers will discuss common exposure risks of the inpatient, outpatient, private practice, and homecare settings. Most importantly, they’ll discuss effective ways to manage these risks.

The nursing shortage affects staffing predicaments. Mandated staffing ratios help staffing predicaments but are hampered by the shortage. Speakers will review nursing shortage facts and provide information on nursing intensity tools and mandated staffi ng ratios. Participation in this pre-Congress program will help you identify resources to optimize patient care.

Pre-Congress Session 6: Interpreting Peripheral Blood Smears: Applications to Advanced Practice
Monday, April 23, 2:00 – 6:00 pm
This is a half day session.

Interpreting peripheral blood smears is often confusion. Speakers will discuss how to obtain and stain peripheral smears and work with participants to identify normal and abnormal cells often reported in a complete blood count. Cellular abnormalities will be reinforced with case studies, leading to a discussion about specific hematological disorders.

Pre-Congress Session 7: Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy and Ovarian Cancer
Monday, April 23, 2:00 – 6:00 pm
This is a half day session.

Intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPC) has gained a lot of attention recently when talking about innovative ways to treat ovarian cancer. Speakers will review ovarian cancer, explore the evidence to support using IPC as a treatment option, and discuss how to use and care for IP catheters. Their presentation will be framed by case discussions and interactive discussions.

Pre-Congress Session 8: Living Beyond Cancer: What Oncology Nurses Need to Know
Monday, April 23, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm
This is a half day session.

Learn about issues facing cancer survivors after completing active treatment. Speakers will incorporate recommendations of the 2005 Institue of Medicine report on survivorship and operationalize strategies that assist patients through the transition from active treatment to long-term survival. You'll get a review of chronic and late effects of treatment, and case reviews will demonsrate common patient courses. In addition, you'll participate in small group discussions about survivorship care plans.
