Leslie Tyson

ONS Clinical Lecture
Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: New Hope for a Chronic Illness?

Wednesday, April 25 • 12:30 – 2 pm
Leslie Tyson, MS, APRN-BC, OCN®, nurse practitioner in the thoracic oncology service at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY, will present this year's ONS Clinical Lecture.

Tyson has been at MSKCC for 28 years, working primarily in thoracic oncology and clinical trials. A well-known speaker, she frequently lectures on targeted therapies, EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors in non-small lung cancer, and chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. Her publications include 100 Questions and Answers About Symptoms and Cancer Treatment Side Effects.

Tyson earned her BSN from Columbia University School of Nursing and her MS from the State University of New York-Stony Brook.

 

 

Ida Marie Moore

Distinguished Researcher Session
Wednesday, April 25 • 2:30–4 pm
Ida Marie Moore, BSN, MA, DNS, is this year's ONS Distinguished Researcher. Moore is a professor and director of the division of nursing practice in the College of Nursing at the University of Arizona in Tucson.

A long-time ONS member, Moore has received numerous honors throughout her career, including the Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award at the University of Arizona and the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award at the University of Iowa College of Nursing.

Moore has published extensively in journals such as the Oncology Nursing Forum, Nursing Clinics in North America, Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing, and Biological Research for Nursing. In addition, she has completed research on topics such as the impact of leukemia on the central nervous system, biomarkers, and neuropsychological evaluation of children. She earned her BSN and her MA from the University of Iowa and her DNS from the University of California, San Francisco.

 

Rebecca Crane-Okada

Mara Mogensen Flaherty Memorial Lecture
A Compass for the Cancer Journey: Scientific, Spiritual, and Practical Directives

Thursday, April 26, 8:30 – 10 am
Rebecca Crane-Okada, PhD, RN, AOCN®, will present this year's Mara Mogensen Flaherty Memorial Lecture. Each year, this lecture addresses a topic related to the psychosocial aspects of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and care.

Crane-Okada is a clinical nurse researcher and the oncology clinical nurse specialist for the Joyce Eisenberg Keefer Breast Center at the John Wayne Cancer Institute and Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, CA. She has been a registered nurse in cancer care for 30 years.

With funding from the Avon Foundation, she is conducting two research studies aimed at improving women's recovery after breast cancer surgery. One looks at breast and shoulder symptoms, lymphedema, and quality of life. The second involves providing peer counseling by phone to support women after surgery, in collaboration with a community senior service agency. She is a scientific member of her on-site institutional review board and has long-term experience with the implementation of cancer clinical trials through the NSABP and ACOSOG.

Crane-Okada received her BS from Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, and her MN and PhD at UCLA.
