Opening Session/Keynote Address
Friday, November 11 • 12:30 – 2 pm

The Courage to Nurse: Quality Care Through Nursing Excellence

Rhonda A. Scott, PhD, RN, CS, chief nursing officer at Grady Health System in Atlanta, GA, will present this year’s keynote address. In “The Courage to Nurse: Quality Care Through Nursing Excellence,” she will teach you 10 acts of courage that will increase patient satisfaction, increase quality of care, ensure patient safety, and support the nursing profession.

Throughout her career, Scott has worked as an administrator, clinical nurse specialist, consultant, educator, researcher, author, and entrepreneur, bringing many perspectives to her presentations. She has spoken internationally on topics such as nursing outcomes, patient satisfaction, and improving the image of nursing. Scott has received many professional honors over the years, including the coveted Tenet Outstanding Chief Nursing Officer Award and the Atlanta Business Chronicle Health Care Hero Award.

An advocate for both patients and nurses, Scott can often be found working side-by-side with her nursing staff to improve quality, safety, and satisfaction.


Trish Greene Memorial Quality of Life Lecture

Dance as a Metaphor for Quality of Life in Patients With Cancer

Lois A. Almadrones, RN, MS, C, FNP, MPA, will present this year’s Trish Greene Memorial Quality of Life Lecture. Almadrones is a clinical nurse specialist in the ambulatory gynecology service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In “Dance as a Metaphor for Quality of Life in Patients With Cancer,” she will inspire you to discover your own patients’ definitions of quality of life (QOL) and to help them to maintain this quality through their cancer journey. Almadrones will describe the domains of QOL as they pertain to patients with cancer. She’ll provide you with strategies to identify your patients’ QOL parameters and tips for helping them achieve QOL before and after their treatment.

A long-time ONS member, Almadrones also belongs to the Society of Gynecologic Nurse Oncologists and the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, as well as a number of other organizations and committees. She has received various professional honors, including the Excellence in Advanced Practice Nursing Award at MSKCC. A leader in her field, she has been published in Oncology Nursing Forum, Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Nursing, and Coping® With Cancer. She also edited Women and Cancer: A Gynecologic Oncology Nursing Perspective (2nd ed).
