The MISSION of the ONS Leadership Development Institute is to prepare oncology nurses to lead the transformation of cancer care at local, state, national and international levels.

The GOAL of the Leadership Development Institute is to promote oncology nursing leadership in all work settings: within ONS Chapters, special interest groups, teams, councils, and boards; and in every arena where oncology nurses can influence cancer care.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  • Compare the concepts of leadership and management
  • Describe strategies that can be used to challenge the process to create change, growth, and innovation.
  • Review personal results on the Leadership Practice Inventory and discuss its application in their practice setting.
  • Apply the framework of Kouzes and Posner Leadership Model to a project to be developed over the next year.
  • Review challenges of LDI project development and completion
  • Discuss strategies for successfully implementing the LDI project
  • Identify leadership growth from participation in the LDI fellows program
  • Discuss how values and risk taking behaviors impact leadership style and review results of the Values Identification and Risk Taking Exercise
  • Develop a plan for implementing a year-long Leadership Development Project
  • Identify the concepts of organizational mission/vision/values
  • Describe the strategic planning process
  • Develop a personal model of leadership
  • Communicate your own personal vision as an oncology nurse leader
  • Describe key leadership resources available through ONS Online and the Internet. 
  • Identify how to participate in an on-line discussion via an ONS Virtual Community
  • Discuss the personal impact of change
  • Identify two mechanisms for dealing with change
  • Describe the process of identifying a Mentor
  • Discuss “what it takes” to be a successful mentee
  • Identify key components of effective communication
  • Develop a strategy for “marketing” a project proposal in verbal and written communication with key decision makers
  • Influence key outcomes with your presentation style and message
  • Describe the potential impact of nurse leaders in all levels of practice
  • Identify key strategies to recognize individual contributions and celebrate team accomplishments
