Past Leaders Give Words of Encouragement"Working in Oncology Nursing challenges each of us to find new and creative ways to make a difference for our patients, their families, and our institutions. Through leadership opportunities, ONS empowers its members to extend 'making a difference' to a broader circle of influence that not only impacts our practice, but also sustains us within our unique specialty. When talking with past or present ONS leaders, you will hear and feel their passion for making things better. It's a contagious spirit that caught me by surprise when I ended my term as Chapter President…and found myself saying "yes" to running for SIG Coordinator, and then saying "yes" again to running for the ONS Board as Secretary. Although I had served in local leadership positions, I didn't consider myself qualified -until validation from ONS friends, colleagues, and leaders reminded me of my passion and abilities to make it a reality. If you've been uncertain about running for national ONS office, focus on the difference you want to make - and the message you have to share. Talk over your goals with a member of the Nominating Committee and your ONS friends. Find out what the national leadership experience is like from someone who's been there. (You may find a fan club in unexpected places!) Most importantly, believe in yourself and what you have to offer ONS and its members." Molly Loney, Nominating Committee |
