Judith Johnson, PhD, RN, FAAN, Receives ONS Lifetime Achievement Award

Judith Johnson, PhD, RN, FAAN, is the recipient of the 2011 Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Lifetime Achievement Award. Johnson is a nurse consultant for HealthQuest in Richfield, MN. The award recognizes her outstanding contributions as an oncology nurse researcher, mentor, and educator as well as her service to ONS and the community at large. She will be honored for the award at ONS’s 36th Annual Congress, scheduled for April 28–May 1 in Boston, MA.

During her career, Johnson developed oncology nursing education materials, training programs, surveys of cancer education practices, and mentorship for nurses. She also developed and implemented several cancer patient education programs including I Can Cope, that was officially adopted by the American Cancer Society, the We Can Weekend, designed to help families use positive skills for coping with the cancer experience, and a multifaceted rehabilitation program for women with cancer, Women in Nature (WIN), in collaboration with the Outward Bound Program.

“Cancer, in my lifetime, has moved from being a death sentence to being a diagnosis that is treatable,” said Johnson. “I have been very fortunate to have had the opportunities and the support of colleagues to create programs to help people with cancer learn ways and resources for living well in spite of their cancer diagnosis.”

Johnson received her bachelor of science in nursing degree from the University of Rochester in Rochester, NY, her master degree in public health nursing and her PhD from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

She is a past-president of ONS, and a member of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer, the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, and the National and World Stroke Association..
