Carol Reed Ash, EdD, RN, FAAN, Receives 2012 ONS Lifetime Achievement Award

Carol Reed Ash, EdD, RN, FAAN, is the recipient of the 2012 Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) Lifetime Achievement Award. Ash is professor emeritus, Kirbo Endowed Chair, Oncology Nursing at the University of Florida in Gainesville. The award recognizes her outstanding contributions as an oncology nurse researcher, mentor, and educator as well as her service to ONS and the community at large. She will be honored for the award at ONS’s 37th Annual Congress, scheduled for May 3–6 in New Orleans, LA.

Ash has dedicated her career to the advancement of science, education, and patient care in the field of oncology nursing on the national and international level. She served as the editor of Cancer Nursing for 28 years and is a prolific author and presenter. She is the driving force behind GatorSHADE™, an innovative strategy for skin cancer prevention and education to a wide variety of community-based audiences ranging from grade-schoolers to adults. Ash was the principal investigator on projects with funded support from agencies such as the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society. She has dedicated herself to making a positive impact on the lives of patients with cancer and nursing professionals worldwide.

“It is an honor to be recognized by the Society for my commitment and contributions throughout the past forty years to the ever-evolving world of cancer care,” said Ash. “It affirms my belief that it is what I was always meant to do, and I am proud to have been a small part of what committed professionals have accomplished and will continue to accomplish.”

Ash received her bachelor of science degree from Albright College/Reading Hospital, in Reading, PA, and her master of arts degree and her EdD from Columbia University in New York, NY.

She is a member of ONS, the American Academy of Nursing, Florida State Nurses Association, TC Nursing Education Alumni Association, and retired faculty of the University of Florida.
