Three ONS Members Named Among Top 10 Influential Nursing Professors

PITTSBURGH, PA – September 24, 2010 – Three ONS members have been named to the list of the top 10 most influential nursing professors by the Mister Medicine blog (http://bit.ly/cY1Stv). ONS president Carlton G. Brown, PhD, RN, AOCN^®, Linda Sarna, DNSc, RN, FAAN, AOCN^®, and Mary Beth Happ, PhD, RN, FAAN, were selected for the honor, which went to nursing professors who’ve influenced students and their peers in their research focus and achievements. The blog encourages students to expand their education and earn new credentials beyond RN.

Brown is an assistant professor at the University of Delaware’s School of Nursing. As ONS president, he lobbies for better legislation to assist patients and the nurses who care for them. He is the author of A Guide to Oncology Symptom Management, published by ONS, and recently received an Award of Excellence in the annual APEX Awards for Publication Excellence, sponsored by Writing That Works.

Sarna is a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Nursing and an expert on tobacco control. As principal investigator for the Tobacco Free Nurses campaign, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Sarna led the first-ever nationwide program to encourage nurses to quit smoking and to promote nursing involvement and leadership in tobacco control.

Happ is a professor in the Acute and Tertiary Care Department at the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Nursing and an adjunct professor at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Nursing. Happ’s research is focused on developing and testing the “SPEACS” nurse training program, to improve communication with nonspeaking, critically ill patients. She received the 2010 Eastern Nursing Research Society John A. Hartford Geriatric Research Award for her significant contributions to nursing research directed toward the older adult population.
