Preface
The incentive for this book was driven primarily by the need for a comprehensive resource to guide staff nurses as well as advanced practice nurses in the delivery of safe and appropriate care to patients with head and neck cancer and their families. Although relatively uncommon, head and neck cancer is a devastating and complex illness that often results in permanent facial disfigurement and dysfunction. The disease process and treatment sequelae are accompanied by a myriad of physical, emotional, and social needs posing challenges to patients, families, and healthcare providers. Nurses play a crucial role in working collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team to coordinate and facilitate patient care across the continuum. We are heartened that advances in standard treatment modalities, including surgical approaches, radiation oncology, and medical oncology, as well as symptom management, are producing increased longevity and improved quality of life. However, the increasing number of survivors will need increased nursing awareness of their disease and treatment as well as compassion for the rigorous ordeal they may have endured. Caring for patients with head and neck cancer is one of the most demanding career paths a nurse can choose. It also is one of the most meaningful and most rewarding. This book, therefore, serves not only as a valuable resource on nursing care for patients with head and neck cancer but also as an introduction to the patients themselves-their courage, their spirit, and their will to survive despite enormous and unique adversity.
