Guidelines for Working With ONS on Technical Supplements

Oncology Nursing Society Journals
The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) publishes two peer-reviewed journals--Oncology Nursing Forum (ONF) and Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing (CJON). Both of these journals publish supplements when appropriate.

• ONF contains in-depth articles that provide a solid base of information for cancer nursing practice. Published 6 times each year, ONF offers detailed coverage of developments in clinical practice, nursing research, and oncology management. Because of its detailed, peer-reviewed content, the ONF is indexed in the British Nursing Index, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL^®) print index and the CINAHL database, EBSCO Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition database, Index Medicus, MEDLINE^®, OCLC Article First database, and the Science Citation Index’s^® Current Contents (Social and Behavioral Sciences and Clinical Medicine), Research Alert, Social Sciences Citation Index^®, and Science Citation Index Expanded™.
• CJON contains concise, clinically focused articles that provide the information that nurses need to deliver direct care to patients and their families. Topical articles in this peer-reviewed journal offer practical information that nurses can apply in their day-to-day practice. Regular features address diagnostic reasoning, evidence-based practice, patient education, integrated care, novel modalities, and more. CJON is indexed in the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature^® (CINAHL^®) print index and the CINAHL database, EBSCO Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition database, and MEDLINE^®.

Guidelines

• Supplement content must be in line with the respective journal's editorial mission, the ONS educational blueprint, and/or ONS's research priorities. The journal editor makes all final decisions regarding acceptance of supplements in concept and individual manuscripts. All manuscripts will undergo the respective journal's peer review process.
• Proposals for supplements should be submitted in writing to Production Manager Leslie McGee, 125 Enterprise Drive, RIDC Park West, Pittsburgh, PA 15275-1214. The proposal should include the supplement topic, approximate number of articles, primary authors' names, proposed deadline date for submission of materials, and the name, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of the contact person proposing the supplement. Supplements contain a minimum of four and a maximum of six manuscripts.
• The production manager will consult with the ONF and CJON editors to determine whether the supplement is appropriate for the ONF or CJON readership and determine a detailed timeline for submitting materials. The feasibility of supportership will be considered as well. All supplements must be supported in order to be financially viable.
• The editor will make the final determination of whether the supplement will offer CNE credit. All CNE tests are prepared, managed, and administered by ONS. ONS is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation and the California Board of Nursing (provider #2850). No other continuing education provider will be used.
• Once the concept for a supplement is approved, the production manager will determine the estimated production costs and work with ONS sales agents to provide the supportership fee. The supporter will receive a letter of agreement from the sales agent, which must be signed and returned.
• Manuscripts must be submitted in accordance with Author Guidelines. When possible, all manuscripts should be submitted simultaneously.
• Manuscripts must be authors' original work. A communications company may assist authors with copyediting (e.g., editing for style, grammar, checking references, formatting tables and figures, etc.) and may facilitate the process by making sure that manuscripts are submitted according to the Author Guidelines and in accordance with the timetable predetermined by the editor. However, authors must write their own manuscripts and comply with journal authorship and financial disclosure requirements. Appropriate information will be shared with reviewers and readers. Supporting companies are not permitted any editorial oversight whatsoever of any supplement manuscripts.
• Once submitted, manuscripts will undergo the standard ONF or CJON peer review process. Peer review will take a minimum of 6 weeks and may take longer. After peer review, the editor may request some revisions. In some instances, manuscripts may require extensive enough revisions that they will need to undergo a second peer review.
• The journal editor and editorial/production staff must communicate directly with authors regarding all content issues.
• The editors and editorial staff will make every effort to publish the supplement on the date specified in the timeline. However, many factors can affect our ability to do this, including the timely submission of manuscripts by the authors and the extent and nature of the required revisions.
