Susan Schneider, PhD, RN, AOCN®, FAAN

Margaret Barton-BurkeSusan M. Schneider is president of the Oncology Nursing Society. ONS is a professional association of more than 39,000 members, including more than 225 local chapters and advocates for oncology nurses at the national level.

Schneider is an associate professor and lead faculty for the oncology nursing specialty at Duke University School of Nursing in Durham, NC, where she teaches graduate-level oncology classes. Schneider has extensive experience in pediatric and adult oncology nursing. She holds certification as a clinical nurse specialist and as an advanced oncology certified nurse. Her research interests include management of symptom distress in patients with cancer, the use of distraction interventions to enhance coping, and the use of tailored protocols to promote chemotherapy adherence. She has received research funding from ONS, the American Cancer Society, and the National Institutes of Health.

Schneider is a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing. She has chaired the American Cancer Society Peer Review Committee on Scholarships and Professorships in Oncology Nursing. Schneider has received both the Excellence in Cancer Nursing Research and Excellence in Cancer Nursing Education awards from ONS. She received her PhD in nursing from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. Her master of science degree is from Texas Woman’s University, and her bachelor of science degree in nursing is from the University of Akron.
