Treatment—Oncology APN Course Topics

  • Background and Fundamentals of Cancer Treatment: treatment types and goals, clinical trials, pharmcodynamics, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacogenomics, tumor sensitivity and resistance, dosing and combination therapy, nutrition during treatment
  • Localized Therapies: surgery (diagnostic and prophylactic surgery, surgical approaches, surgical effects and complications), radiation therapy (goals, planning, types, side effects)
  • Systemic Therapies: chemotherapy agents, hormonal therapy, biotherapy and targeted therapy, safety standards and safe handling, hematopoietic stem cell transplant
  • Complementary, Alternative, and Integrated Therapies: CAM

Expected Outcome

Upon completion of this activity, the learner will demonstrate knowledge of cancer treatment modalities and related clinical practice guidelines by achieving at least 80% on the post-test.

Target Audience

This course is designed for APNs with oncology experience who want to increase their knowledge about critical components of the APN role in cancer care. This course is also appropriate for APNs preparing for advanced oncology certification or renewal via ILNA renewal points.
