story and image

Ellen Stovall, senior health policy advisor for the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) and advocate for cancer survivors throughout the country, passed away on January 5, 2016, because of complications from her cancer treatment. As a 42-year survivor of cancer, Stovall advocated for improved cancer care for more than 30 years. She was responsible for co-editing the Institute of Medicine’s report From Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor: Lost in Transition, which discussed the issues that face adult survivors of cancer.

Stovall’s contributions to the oncology field have been numerous. She served on the boards of directors for the National Committee for Quality Assurance and the Leapfrog Group. She was a committee member of the National Quality Forum, developing cancer care quality measures. Among other panel and committee appointments, she served a six-year term on the National Cancer Institute’s National Cancer Advisory Board, to which she was appointed by President Clinton in 1992. Information about arrangements and more can be found at the NCCS website.
