Employer Recognition Awards
Purpose 

The Employer Recognition Awards acknowledge employers who honor and show exemplary support for registered nurses in oncology. Each award allows the institution to further support oncology nurses by granting sets of free registration to an ONS educational activity and credit for ONS publications or other items.

Institutions that demonstrate a commitment to the ONS mission, vision, and values are strong candidates for the Employer Recognition Awards. Examples of support include helping employees to attend ONS meetings or CNE opportunities, actively promoting ONS publications, recognizing ONS members or supporting their annual dues, and supporting participation in ONS chapters or special interest groups.

Award 

Awards are granted to the employer based on size category.

Small (0–25 oncology nurses)

Two (2)  free registrations to an ONS educational activity
$250 ‘ONS Bucks’ to use for publications or other items

Medium: (26–100 oncology nurses)

Three (3) free registrations to an ONS educational activity
$500 ‘ONS Bucks’ to use for publications or other items

Large: (101 or more oncology nurses)

Four (4) free registrations to an ONS educational activity our registrations
$750 ‘ONS Bucks’ to be used for publications or other items.
 

In addition, Employer Recognition Award recipients will be featured in an issue of ONS Connect. ONS will work with the award recipients' local chapter for recognition at a chapter meeting. 

ONS will not be responsible for any expense incurred by the recipients associated with receiving the award.

Eligibility Criteria 
Award consideration is based on sustained support of the oncology nurse by the employer, as evidenced by one or more of the following examples.
  • Employer’s support of the members to attend ONS meetings such as the Annual Congress.
  • Employer’s support for the member to attend CNE events.
  • Use and promotion of ONS materials such as publications.
  • Employer’s support of the member’s annual ONS dues.
  • Employer’s support of employee involvement in ONS at the national, chapter, or SIG level. 
  • Recognition of ONS members in numerous ways in the facilities where they work.
  • Other measures of recognition, appreciation, encouragement, and advancement of ONS
Application Materials 

Nominations may be made by individual ONS members or by a group of member nurses employed at the same facility. The award nomination form must be submitted along with a maximum of 10 pages of supporting documentation. Selection will be made by the ONS Board of Directors following recommendations by the ONS awards advisory panel.

Current ONS Board members are prohibited from nominating any employer during and for two years immediately following their service. The employers of current ONS Board members are not eligible to be nominated for the Employer Recognition Award during the board member's term.

Honorary Member Award

Honorary Member Award
Purpose 

To honor individuals who are not otherwise eligible for membership, who have made significant contributions to oncology nursing, demonstrated interest and support in ONS, and exhibited conduct consistent with the mission and core values of ONS (integrity, innovation, stewardship, advocacy, excellence, and inclusiveness).

Award 

A plaque, round-trip airfare to the ONS Annual Congress, and a one-day per diem for Congress.

Eligibility Criteria 

The individual must be nominated by an ONS member and receive final approval by the ONS awards advisory panel. In addition, the nominee’s accomplishments must be specific to the field of oncology. These contributions must be significant and must demonstrate a sustained interest in and support of ONS. A listing of these contributions must support the validity of the recognition.

  • Nomination narrative
  • Two (2) letters of support from ONS members
  • One (1) letter of support from a non-ONS member
  • Nominee's curriculum vitae

Emerging Leader Award

2014 Award Recipient
Kevin Brigle, PhD, ANP
Purpose 

To recognize an emerging oncology nurse leader who has made a difference in the oncology nursing profession at the local or regional level. Candidates should be at an early stage on the path of their leadership career.

Award 

A $250 award, a plaque, and travel reimbursement to attend the opening ceremonies at the ONS Annual Congress.

Eligibility Criteria 
The nominee must be an active ONS member who has been nominated by an ONS member. In addition, the nominee should
  • Be a registered professional nurse
  • Have a minimum of one year of oncology leadership experience
  • Not have previously received the Emerging Leader Award.
When these criteria are met, primary consideration will be on how the nominee
  • Advances the oncology nursing profession and quality cancer care at the local/regional level
  • Mentors, precepts, orients, coaches, or teaches nurses in the practice of oncology nursing
  • Demonstrates leadership at the local or regional level, which may include oncology-related leadership in the areas of community and public service, advocacy, health literacy, supportive services, and/or academic activities.

  • Nominee's resume or curriculum vitae
  • Two (2) letters of support from any of the following: 1) colleague, 2) patient/caregiver, or 3) employer/supervisor
Travel Information 

The recipient will receive travel reimbursement to attend the ONS Annual Congress. ONS will reimburse the award recipient for round-trip economy airfare to and from the recipient's home address to the Congress location, provided the recipient makes all travel arrangements through American Express Travel, ONS's official travel agency. Additionally, one (1) night's lodging will be permitted provided that the recipient makes the hotel arrangements through the ONS meetings department. Meals for a 24-hour period will be reimbursed, along with the reimbursement of certain ground transportation situations and parking. Purpose 

 To recognize a frontline oncology nurse who demonstrates exceptional patient care through the use of evidence-based practice

Award 

A $250 award, a plaque, and travel reimbursement to attend the opening ceremonies at the ONS Annual Congress

Eligibility Criteria 
The nominee must be an active member of ONS who has been nominated by an ONS member. In addition, the nominee should
  • Have primary duties and responsibilities focused on full-time patient care (non-management)
  • Clearly demonstrate a commitment to evidence-based practice
  • Provide outstanding direct care to the patient population.
Application Materials 
The following materials are required.
  • Nomination narrative statement
  • Nominee's resume or curriculum vitae
  • Two (2) letters of support from any of the following: 1) colleague, 2) patient/caregiver, or 3) employer/supervisor

ONS is honored with multiple excellence awards by Association Media and Publishing, demonstrating ONS's commitment to providing top-notch products to healthcare professionals who care for patients with cancer.

The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) was recognized for excellence in publishing by the Association Media and Publishing (AM&P) during the organization’s 34th Annual EXCEL Awards Gala in Tysons Corner, VA. ONS won AM&P’s Bronze EXCEL Award in three categories which  demonstrates ONS’s commitment to communicating oncology-focused news and information to healthcare professionals who care for patients with cancer and their families.
 
ONS received Bronze EXCEL Awards for:

Team Achievement Award

Westchester Medical Center Advanced Oncology and Infusion Services Team
Purpose 

To recognize small teams (minimum of three, maximum of ten) for outstanding contributions within their workplace, in improving patient care, and/or making a difference in their community

Award 

A $250 award, a team plaque, and travel reimbursement for one team member (determined by the team) to attend the opening ceremonies at the ONS Annual Congress

Eligibility Criteria 
  • The leader of the team must be an RN and an active member of ONS.
  • The team effort provides a valuable service, process improvement, or contribution to the workplace and/or community, resulting in improved patient care and/or improved education.
  • The team project includes a demonstration of commitment to the ONS core values.
  • The team project results in increased patient and community awareness of the value of the oncology nursing profession to the well-being of the patient population.

 

Application Materials 
The following materials are required.
  • Nomination narrative statement
  • Two (2) letters of support from any of the following: 1) colleague, 2) patient/caregiver, or 3) employer/supervisor
  • A list of the team members (minimum of 3 and a maximum of 10)

ONS will reimburse one (1) representative, selected by the qualifying members of the Team Achievement Award, for roundtrip economy airfare to and from the recipient’s home address to the location of the ONS Annual Congress, provided the recipient makes all travel arrangements through American Express Travel, ONS’s official travel agency. Additionally, one (1) night’s lodging will be permitted provided that the recipient makes the hotel arrangements through ONS meetings department. Meals for a 24-hour period will be reimbursed, along with the reimbursement of certain ground transportation situations and parking, but there are limitations.
