The Metro Detroit Chapter of ONS celebrated the 25th anniversary of their annual meeting in February. One hundred fifty-seven people, including 33 nursing students, attended the full-day conference that featured sessions on cutting-edge topics.

To commemorate the occasion, U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) recorded a video message recognizing the role of oncology nurses in cancer care. Specifically, the senator noted her support of nursing education, research, and workforce issues that safeguard both healthcare providers—like nurses—and the patients for whom they care.

Real-life issues regarding treatment options, patient education, palliative care, hospice care, and often end-of-life discussions are daily conversations oncology nurses have with patients and caregivers. Senator Stabenow is a champion for access and affordable health for all Americans and understands the role of the nurse in the delivery of treatment and care.

“Our group is very passionate about this organization and mentoring other nurses and students about oncology nursing,” said chapter president Heather Lowry, RN, WHNP-BC, CBCN®. “In fact many on the conference planning committee have been involved in planning the conference for each of the 25 conferences we have had. I think that speaks to the success of our chapter. We have a group of passionate nurses who are dedicated to our profession. We strive to provide the nurses in our chapter with excellent educational events, resources, and mentorship to help promote professional satisfaction and quality care for our patients."

The chapter originally started 39 years ago as the Michigan Oncology Nurses Association and became an official ONS chapter 35 years ago in November 2014.
