Purpose 

To recognize and support excellence in patient and public education 

Award 

A $500 award, a plaque, and travel reimbursement to attend the ONS Annual Congress

Eligibility Criteria 
Nominees for this award will be oncology nurses who are involved in offering creative public or patient education. The nominee must be an active ONS member who has been nominated by an ONS member. In addition, he or she should
  • Be a registered professional nurse
  • Have a minimum of two years experience in oncology nursing.
Application Materials 
The following materials are required.
  • Nomination narrative statement
  • Nominee's resume or curriculum vitae
  • Nominee's personal statement
  • Two (2) letters of support
Important Notice About the Nomination Deadline 

ONS uses a vendor-supported online program for all award nomination applications. At exactly 5 pm ET on September 30, the application site will automatically shut down. Any applications that are not completed at this time will be terminated and will not be accepted. This deadline cannot be extended without prior authorization from the ONS Awards advisory panel and the ONS Board of Directors.

Scoring Criteria 
The scoring criteria for judging this nomination packet is as follows.
  • Candidate teaches patients or community groups in manner consistent with the ONS Standards of Oncology Education: Patient/Family and Public.
  • Candidate identifies needs for education in patients, families, or communities and plans innovative programs to meet those identified needs.
  • Programs have clearly stated objectives.
  • Content of program(s) is relevant to population served.
  • Creative strategies and presentation techniques are used in implementing program.
  • Program evaluation methods are appropriate.
  • Candidate serves as a role model for other nurses.
  • Candidate creates a network to sustain health-promoting behaviors.
  • Candidate establishes positive teacher-learner relationships.

Our ONS Award Nomination deadline was Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 5:00 PM EST. Our ONS Award Nominations will reopen in April 2018 through September 30, 2018.

Travel Information 

The recipient will receive travel reimbursement to attend the ONS Annual Congress. ONS will reimburse the award recipient for round-trip economy airfare to and from the recipient's home address to the Congress location, provided the recipient makes all travel arrangements through American Express Travel, ONS's official travel agency. Additionally, one (1) night's lodging will be permitted provided that the recipient makes the hotel arrangements through the ONS meetings department. Meals for a 24-hour period will be reimbursed, along with the reimbursement of certain ground transportation situations and parking, but there are limitations. Please contact awards@ons.org for complete details about the travel reimbursement policy.

Commendation for Outstanding Achievement for Oncology Nursing Education or Patient/Family Education
2017 Award Recipient

Purpose 

To recognize and reward excellence in the written description of a patient education development activity or an innovation in delivery of professional nursing education, either in the context of an academic program, continuing nursing education, or staff development. Content may be presented in the context of a research report, clinical article, or expanded feature in ONF or CJON. The number of commendations may vary from year to year.

Award 

A certificate presented to and accepted by the first author on behalf of the writing or research team. These papers will be acknowledged at the ONS Annual Congress in the compendium of awards, honors, and other special recognitions produced and distributed annually by ONS.

Eligibility Criteria 
A published article or extended feature presentation is eligible for commendation if it
  • As its primary focus, has a description of an educational intervention for patients/families or an approach to education of the professional nurse (academic or staff development)
  • Is selected by the editor of ONF or CJON based on subject matter and exemplary presentation
  • Has a nurse as the first author
  • Achieves a combined average score exceeding 20 on the scoring criteria.
Application Materials 

ONS does not accept nominations or applications for the Commendation for Outstanding Achievement for Oncology Nursing Education or Patient/Family Education. All published articles that meet the selection criteria will be considered automatically.

Scoring Criteria 
  • The authors identify a new approach/intervention/method for education of patients/family or professional nurses or scientifically validate an existing approach/intervention/method.
  • The article identifies and incorporates relevant educational ideas or theories.
  • The article addresses a range of concerns regarding educational endeavors including needs for the program, development, evaluation of impact, and offers ideas for future research/development as appropriate.
  • The article is written clearly and descriptive enough for replication of the teaching strategies/program or delivery of information.
  • The content is adaptable to a wide variety of clinical or academic situations as appropriate.
