Purpose 

To recognize the contributions of a member who has conducted or promoted research that has enhanced the science and practice of oncology nursing. The recipient will present his or her research results at the ONS Annual Congress.

Award 

A $2,000 award, a plaque, and travel reimbursement to attend the ONS Annual Congress

Eligibility Criteria 
The nominee must be an active ONS member who has been nominated by an ONS member. In addition, the nominee must have an earned doctorate in nursing or a related field, and demonstrate the following.
  • Evidence of outstanding and major contributions to the scientific foundation for practice
  • Evidence of a sustained program of substantive research
  • Evidence of a record of publication in oncology
  • Evidence that the scientist's research program has advanced the delivery of quality cancer care by nurses
  • Evidence that the scientist's research program has provided a foundation for research by others
  • Evidence of documented contributions to ONS
  • Evidence of documented contributions to the cancer community-at-large.

  • Two (2) letters of recommendation
  • The nominee's curriculum vitae

Important Notice About the 2019 Awards Nomination Deadline

ONS uses an external, vendor-supported online program for award nomination applications. The nominations will close at exactly 5:00 pm EST on September 30th.

Any open or incomplete applications will not be accepted after this time. There will not be any deadline extensions to be fair to all nominees without prior authorization from the ONS Awards Advisory Panel and the ONS Board of Directors. Travel Information 

The recipient will receive travel reimbursement to attend the ONS Annual Congress. ONS will reimburse the award recipient for round-trip economy airfare to and from the recipient's home address to the Congress location, provided the recipient makes all travel arrangements through American Express Travel, ONS's official travel agency. Additionally, one (1) night's lodging will be permitted provided that the recipient makes the hotel arrangements through the ONS meetings department. Meals for a 24-hour period will be reimbursed, along with the reimbursement of certain ground transportation situations and parking, but there are limitations. Please contact awards@ons.org for complete details about the travel reimbursement policy.

Two ONS members were included among the 19 highly distinguished nurse researchers that Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing recognized in the 2016 International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame.

Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Honor Society of Nursing recognized two ONS members, Deborah Watkins-Bruner, PhD, RN, FAAN, and Janet Carpenter, PhD, RN, FAAN, among the 19 nurse researchers selected for its 2016 International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame.
 
The purpose of STTI’s Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame is to recognize nurse researchers who have achieved significant and sustained national or international recognition for their work and whose research has impacted the profession and the people it serves. As part of their achievement, Carpenter and Watkins-Bruner met STTI’s rigorous criteria for the award, including 
 
  • Integrated scholarship in their specialty and a significant and sustained level of achievement in nursing research, which has had an impact on the profession, patients, families, community, or policy
  • A distinguished record of peer-reviewed publications 
  • Receiving funding for a justified unique context 
  • Mentoring novice researchers 
  • Having a program of research with a measurable impact on policy or promotion of quality and value to service delivery
  • Translating evidence to practice. 
Since 2010, STTI has been inducting nurse researchers who have achieved significant and sustained broad national or international recognition for their work and whose research has impacted the profession and the people it serves.
