Transmucosal Opioids

Transmucosal opioids are used to manage breakthrough pain in patients with cancer. These medications include various formulations such as buccal tablets, soluble film, lozenges, and nasal spray. Fentanyl nasal spray is used to treat breakthrough pain in patients aged 18 years or more who take regularly scheduled doses of another opioid. Fentanyl is an opiate analgesic with a relatively short half-life that can be rapidly absorbed via the nasal mucosa. Nasal fentanyl products deliver the drug in a solution with a fine mist. Various formulations of nasal spray may include other substances such as pectin as a delivery platform for the solution.
