Purpose 

To recognize ONS members who have made outstanding contributions to the field of oncology nursing and to ONS; who have been important leaders within the Society and in their communities; and who exemplify the mission and core values of ONS (integrity, innovation, stewardship, advocacy, excellence, and inclusiveness).

Award 
$2,000 award, round-trip airfare to Congress, a one-day per diem for Congress, a plaque, a specially designed ONS pin, and perpetual complementary membership in ONS.
Eligibility Criteria 
The nominee must be an active ONS member who has been nominated by an ONS member. Nominees will have made outstanding contributions to cancer nursing and to ONS during their professional career, and demonstrated the highest professional standards of oncology nursing.

Ellen Stovall, senior health policy advisor for the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) and advocate for cancer survivors throughout the country, passed away on January 5, 2016, because of complications from her cancer treatment.

Ellen Stovall, senior health policy advisor for the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) and advocate for cancer survivors throughout the country, passed away on January 5, 2016, because of complications from her cancer treatment. As a 42-year survivor of cancer, Stovall advocated for improved cancer care for more than 30 years. She was responsible for co-editing the Institute of Medicine’s report From Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor: Lost in Transition, which discussed the issues that face adult survivors of cancer. 
 
Stovall’s contributions to the oncology field have been numerous. She served on the boards of directors for the National Committee for Quality Assurance and the Leapfrog Group. She was a committee member of the National Quality Forum, developing cancer care quality measures. Among other panel and committee appointments, she served a six-year term on the National Cancer Institute’s National Cancer Advisory Board, to which she was appointed by President Clinton in 1992. To recognize and support excellence in nurses engaged in cancer prevention and early detection

Award 

A $500 award, a plaque, and travel reimbursement to attend the ONS Annual Congress

Eligibility Criteria 
The nominee must be an active ONS member who has been nominated by an ONS member. In addition, the nominee should
  • Be a registered professional nurse and an active ONS member
  • Have at least two years of oncology nursing experience
  • Be a recognized expert in the field of cancer prevention and early detection (i.e., through publications, presentations, research, and peer review)
  • Demonstrate a significant contribution to one or more of the following related to cancer prevention and early detection: professional/patient education, clinical practice, and/or nursing research
  • Serve as a role model for other nurses.

Scoring Criteria 
ONS involvement: Participation should include involvement at the local or national level.

  • Includes articles in newsletters, journals, reports, video, multimedia, computer assisted instruction, chapters in books (do not include research here, include research in last criteria point)

Nancy Jo Bush, DNP, RN, MA, AOCN®, FAAN
Purpose 

This award is named in memory of Dr. Mary Nowotny, an active ONS member and past chair of the ONS Education Committee. Throughout her career, she was a cancer education advocate and a widely published author, writing many articles on the measurement and significance of hope in patients with cancer. The Mary Nowotny Excellence in Cancer Nursing Education Award recognizes and supports excellence in cancer nursing education.

Award 

A $500 award, a plaque, and travel reimbursement to attend the ONS Annual Congress.

Eligibility Criteria 
The nominee must be an active ONS member who has been nominated by an ONS member. In addition, the nominee should
  • Be a registered professional nurse and an active ONS member
  • Have a minimum of two years' experience in oncology education
  • Be an educator who is a recognized expert in cancer education because of his or her contributions to cancer education at the local, state, national, or international level.

Scoring Criteria 
The scoring criteria for judging this nomination packet is as follows.
  • The nominee is an educator whose teaching in cancer education programs is consistent with the ONS/American Nurses Association Statement on the Scope and Standards of Oncology Nursing Practice and has basis in the ONS Standards of Oncology Nursing Education.
  • Educator has made contributions to cancer education at the local, state, national, or international level.
  • Educator has, in implementing cancer education programs, met the identified needs for cancer nursing education in his or her geographical area.
  • Educator implements programs that are well developed, with clearly stated objectives.
  • Content of programs is relevant to current cancer nursing practice and is well presented.
  • Educator uses relevant and appropriate evaluation methods.
  • Educator is knowledgeable in the content area, establishes a positive teacher-learner relationship, and promotes and supports cancer education
  • Educator is supportive of and contributes to the development of professional oncology nursing practice.

Rose Mary Carroll-Johnson Distinguished Award for Consistent Contribution to Nursing Literature

Purpose 

To recognize an individual who has made consistent and significant contributions to oncology nursing literature. Nominees for this award will be oncology nurses who have had an impact on the profession, specifically by using the written word to share research findings, describe content basic to the care of patients with cancer, and support the professional development of colleagues.

Award 

A $2,000 award, a plaque, round-trip airfare to the ONS Annual Congress, and a one-day per diem for Congress

Eligibility Criteria 
The nominee must be an active ONS member who has been nominated by an ONS member. In addition, the nominee must be an RN who
  • Has at least five years of experience in oncology nursing and five years of membership in ONS.
  • Demonstrates longevity and consistency of oncology-related professional communication (i.e., an established pattern of regular publication in a variety of forums: cross-section of peer-reviewed journals, books, monographs, ONS publications).
  • Demonstrates evidence of breadth of professional writing (i.e., variety of topics; variety of types of writing: journal-length, book chapters, editorials, letters to the editor, book reviews).
  • Demonstrates appropriate depth of written material (i.e., quality of material, appropriateness to audience, comprehensiveness of coverage).
  • Demonstrates evidence of mentorship for colleagues engaged in writing professional materials (i.e., formal teaching activity, membership on theses/dissertation committees, coauthorship on published materials, editorial activity on oncology-related books/materials or professional nursing journals).
  • Writes materials that are used and cited by other authors.
Please note that the Rose Mary Carroll-Johnson Distinguished Award for Consistent Contribution to Nursing Literature is the only ONS publishing award judged from nominations.
