This course provides an overview of fundamental advanced practice cancer care related to the identification, diagnosis, and management of selected oncologic emergencies.
This redesigned and updated program was created with the new oncology advanced practice provider in mind. Through a series of four online courses, learners will get a comprehensive look at of the basics of cancer and its treatment, symptom and side effect management, and the identification of and management of oncologic emergencies with content designed for the advanced practice provider.

Dr. Calzone provides an overview of the emerging use of paired somatic and germline testing to inform cancer treatment decisions. She will explain the science and clinical utility of this test along with the risks, benefits, and limitations. Throughout her presentation she will connect her content to the role of the oncology nurse and practice implications.
Dr. Friend reviews biomarker basics, which sets an important foundation to understand how biomarkers and biomarker testing informs treatment decisions and oncology nursing care. She reviews the different types of biomarkers and the classification of variants so that you can use the right terms in practice when speaking to the patient or the healthcare team. She then applies what she taught through a multitude of case examples.
Dr. Kelly provides an overview of liquid biopsy and its applications to oncology nursing care. After she reviews the evolving technology and clinical indications, she will talk through an analysis of advantages and challenges of the utilization of liquid biopsy. She will round out her talk by discussing nursing implications and the future of liquid biopsy.
Dr. Mahon provides an overview of germline testing and implications for nursing practice. She introduces the assessment findings that would lead to a referral to a genetics healthcare professional and the need of germline testing. She then reviews the possible outcomes of germline testing and what that interpretation means for the oncology nurse providing care to the patient.
