Ghrelin

Ghrelin is a 28-amino acid peptide that is produced by cells lining the fundus of the stomach. It is a hormone that increases appetite through action on hypothalamic feeding centers. Ghrelin and ghrelin mimetics have been examined in treatment of cancer-related anorexia. Ghrelin has a short half-life (about 30 minutes) and is administered by injection.

Gene Therapy

Gene therapy was examined for its effect on pain in patients with cancer. A gene transfer vector was injected intradermally into dermatomes corresponding to the individual’s pain distribution in a phase I trial.

Garlic

Garlic is a plant species in the onion genus that has been used for culinary and medicinal purposes. Garlic extracts demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity in vivo. Garlic extract has been examined for its effect in the prevention of infection among patients with cancer

Gabapentin Monotherapy

Gabapentin is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. Gabapentin treats seizures by decreasing excitement in the brain and has been studied for its effect in patients with cancer who have neuropathic pain or symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. It also has been studied for its effect on anxiety and hot flashes. Gabapentin monotherapy involves use of the drug alone rather than as an adjunctive medication.

Gabapentin Combinations

Gabapentin, an anticonvulsant, treats seizures by decreasing excitement in the brain. The medication works by changing the way the body senses pain. Researchers have studied the effects of gabapentin in patients with cancer who have neuropathic pain or symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. Gabapentin is also used in combination with other medications, such as opioids and imipramine, for the treatment of neuropathic pain and other symptoms.

Gabapentin and Opioid Combination

Gabapentin is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. Gabapentin treats seizures by decreasing excitement in the brain. Gabapentin has been studied for its effect in patients with cancer who have neuropathic pain or symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. Its effect occurs by changing the way the body senses pain.

Gabapentin has been studied for its effect in patients with cancer who have neuropathic pain or symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. The drug changes the way the body senses pain. It has also been studied for its effect on anxiety, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, and hot flashes.

Frequent IV Tubing and Component Changes

The Healthcare Infection Control Practices Advisory Committee (HICPAC) 2011 guidelines recommend that IV administration sets should not be changed more often than every 96 hours, or 72 hours for needle-less systems, unless used for blood products. Studies have examined the effects of more frequent IV tubing or other components of administration sets on patients with cancer.

Foot Massage

Foot massage is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the feet using the hands, including combinations of strokes, rubs, and the application of pressure. It has been theorized that foot massage may help control pain by closing gates in the spinal cord, blocking the passage of pain stimuli to the central nervous system. Foot massage has been evaluated for its effect on acute and chronic pain among patients with cancer.

Folinic Acid

Folinic acid is a form of vitamin B that has vitamin activity like folic acid. It is a coenzyme in many metabolic reactions. Systemic and local administration of folinic acid have been examined in patients with cancer for prevention of oral mucositis.
